More Short Films

Humor is an important part of Sher's work and personality.  Laughter is a powerful and universal response, not a passive laugh track.  Freud writes that “humor is not resigned, it is rebellious.” Fun(ny) was particularly disparaged in my own formal art education. It was only once I began making films that I realized the power of humor and started to question the limits I had been taught. My first film, The Training, was a satire on the behavioral technique for toilet training, made while I was trying to train one of my kids. Audiences laughed – which for me meant success. Connecting with my viewers empowered me to stop worrying about the rules and affirmed my belief that a work of art or short film can be simultaneously intelligent and fun.
