In Material: Conversations on Qualities of Materiality by Satri Pencak

"From the work of three artists emerges a conversation about shared experiences expressed in different styles, media, and techniques. In Material, an exhibition at Quicksilver Mine Co. Gallery in Forestville, CA, features the work of Brooke Holve, Susan Field, and Elizabeth Sher....The culminating body of work is distinctive and yet self-reflective, showing unique and individual styles but also their connections, synchronicities, and eventual creation of new work based on their meetings, musings and conversations." Satri Pencak, Independent Curator and former Program Director of the Sebastopol Center for the Arts. The full review at www.satripencak.com

The Art of the Book

Two of my new books, Arbres arrencats d'ametles and 10 Views of Mt. Doggie, will be in the upcoming Art of the Book show at Donna Seager Gallery, March 18 through April 30, 2011. The reception for the artists will be held Saturday, March 26 from 6 to
8pm.
I'm honored to have been included in this show since it's inception. There is always a fabulous selection of books. Please come by and take a look.

New York Art

Just spent a week long art blitz in NYC. Always inspiring - especially the museums. Nice sync between Picasso guitar show at MOMA and Guitar Heros at the Met. Lower Eastside is happening and galleries are open on Sunday! Frosch & Portman up and coming. New Museum Condo, Benglis and The Hub, Laurie Simmons dolls, in Chelsea could not wait the 3 hours to see the Clock - maybe should not have waited until the last day of the show :). Tara Donovan at Pace - whole lotta pins, Morgan's library redone and open - has many "from the school ofs" - hmmmm. Hopper always a treat. Much to mull over, chew over, think over as soon as I get my show in Forestville at Quicksilver Mine Co. installed. Read Patti Smith "Just Kids" on the plane - fabulous.

Mommy's Studio

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays a mommy from the drive to get to her studio.

This lightbox resonates as a reminder of my life with young kids. It is the studio of Kendra Dodsworth who is renting my old studio in Berkeley.

New Works on Metal

The End of the World as We Know It from the Reflecting on Reflection is a triptych on metal Each section is 12 x 18". It is a post election meditation on climate change, and the proposed elimination of the EPA and the Clean Air and Water Acts. © 2010 An installation shot with detail from a series of drawings on metal based on those made at Can Serrat residency in Barcelona, Spain last April. The upturned almond roots became metaphors for change, displacement and loss and will be included in Arbres Arencats d'Ametles, my upcoming Artist Book with poems by Maw Shein Win to be completed in 2011.

Bioneers 2010

"When I think about the Endangered Lessor Long Nosed Bat (pollinator of the Agave Plant from which Tequila is Made)I I Go Batty" was made

for Vanishing Pollinators

An Ecoart exhibit produced by WEAD, The Women Environmental Artists Directory For the 2010 Bioneers Conference, October 15 – 17 Marin County Civic Center, San Rafael

I had not known that the bats were pollinators or even that they were endangered until I started my research for this show. When I found out they are important pollinators of the agave plant from which tequila is made, I realized we definitely need this bat!

Appropriate to the 2010 Conference focus on food and farming, exhibit artists explore the urgent plight of endangered pollinators. Essential to survival of all plants and trees, fruits and vegetables, pollinators range from beetles, bats, butterflies, and moths to ants. The media often ignores the issue’s urgency. Fortunately, the federal government, recognizing incipient danger, is now initiating research to develop programs to deter decline.
